In the fall of 2023, students in Professor Amalia Leifeste’s HP 8030: Building Technology and Pathology class were tasked with assembling the knowledge of building systems that they had developed over the course of the class in order to perform a building pathology investigation on a post-1900 building. Students were required to describe the major building systems (roof, foundation, enclosure, HVAC, etc.), create a descriptive diagram of the systems, and perform a pathology investigation to identify mechanisms of decay, impacted building systems, potential causes and any related conditions, severity, and recommendations for addressing the mechanism of decay.
Fellow student Chloe Martin and I collaborated on the investigation of 371 King Street, historically known as the Garden Theater. This building was constructed 1917-1918, and is currently in use as a clothing retailer. On multiple visits to the building, Chloe and I completed our investigation through visual inspection, using both regular photography and thermal imaging. Chloe completed the architectural and building systems descriptions, I completed the exploded axonometric diagrams, and we collaborated on the pathology investigation.
