The Clemson University Graduate Program in Historic Preservation Class of 2024 had the honor of receiving third place in the 2023 Charles E. Petersen Prize contest. This prize is presented by the National Park Service’s Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP), The Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the American Institute of Architects, and the Association for Preservation Technology. The prize recognizes exemplary measured drawings recording a site in the United States following HDP standards, and submissions are entered into the Library of Congress’s HABS/HAER/HALS Collection.
Our drawing submission began as a class effort in the Fall of 2022 with the documentation of St. James Protestant Episcopal Church in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Following a round of revisions during that semester, myself, Jacob Hockenberry, and Chloe Martin were brought on as Project Leaders to do another round of revisions and add to the drawing set during the spring and early summer of 2023. In November of 2023, Jacob, Chloe, myself, and our professor, Amalia Leifeste, travelled to Philadelphia to accept the 3rd place award and attend the Roger W. Moss Symposium, entitled “Documentation by Design: Celebrating 90 Years of the Historic American Buildings Survey and 40 Years of the Charles E. Petersen Prize,” at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. It was an honor to accept the award, meet the other prize winners, and to hear from some of the preservationists who have decades of experience working with HABS and within the field of preservation.
