Each year, students in the HP 8090: Historical Research Methods class are assigned a property to research based upon a theme selected by Professor Katherine Pemberton. For the Fall of 2022, students were tasked with researching properties within Charleston’s Ward Four, an area historically known as Charleston’s red light district. I was assigned 31 Archdale Street. Through archival research, I uncovered a history of women’s property ownership in the city, along with the likely existence of a brothel at the address. My findings can be found in the report below.
